What Is Botox used for?

Botox is also known as botulinum toxin type A. Botox is produced from the causative organism of botulism. Botulinum toxin acts by blocking nerve activity in the muscles, thereby causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity.

Botox uses:

Botox is used in the treatment of cervical dystonia (i.e severe spasms in the muscles of the neck), and muscle stiffness in the upper limbs which includes elbows, fingers, wrist and Botox is also used in the treatment of severe underarm sweating called hyperhidrosis.

How is Botox Administered?

Botox injections should be administered only by a trained medical professional, even when it’s being used for just cosmetic purposes.

Botox Dose and Dosage Form:

Botox comes as only in the injectable form. Botox is injected into the muscles and it should be only administered by a doctor, nurse, or other trained healthcare providers. Botox injections should not be administered repeatedly in a patient, it should be spaced by at least 3 months after the injection is given. Botox injection may be administered into more than one area at the same time, depending on the condition that’s being treated.

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction to Botox which includes breathing difficulty, hives, dizziness, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Warning: Patients should be warned about using this injection more often than prescribed, taking and increased or decreased dose of Botox injection will not make it more effective and may result in more serious side effects. Overdose symptoms may not occur right away, but it can occurs as weak or shallow breathing, difficulty with swallowing and muscle weakness. Patients should note that Botox may affect vision or depth perception, so be careful when you drive or do anything that requires you to stand erect and seeing clearly.
